Trier, Germany

We had alot of fun exploring Trier. We only saw about half of the sites. We live so close, we can visit again and again. Trier is the oldest city in Germany. The Romans took the city in the 1st century BC.

The Porta Nigra, a 2nd century Roman city gate, is black due to iron leaching from the sandstone. Only gravity and iron rods hold the entire structure together. Weren't the Romans amazing architects? During the middle ages a hermit, St. Simeon, lived in the gate. It was later added upon, making the gate into St. Simeon's church. Later, Napoleon took Trier and had the gate restored to it's original Roman structure.

That's me with the kids under the gate, walking the Roman street.

The kids loved exploring and were briefly confronted by a Roman centurion. A tour guide was dressed up, but I didn't get a good enough picture of him.

I sure wish I could travel as easy as William.
